Mix, Mix, Mix More – Flat Design is Dead

20 Oct

If the graphics on your apparel are flat, your sales probably are too.  Either that or you find yourself in a constant tug of war with the shop down the street or online – throwing away margin for lack of creativity.  Back and forth you trade bids, slash deals, drive down prices, throw away profit.  Is this you?

There is a better way.  I’ve recently returned from the SGIA trade show as I’m sure you know by now, and I can tell you that flat graphics and flat designs are dead.  Yes, I know I’m promoting a new material that feels just like the garment, yeah I know there were 2 new DTG printers released on the scene, yeah I know there was a new M&R screen printing machine released for oversized prints, yeah I know all of this….but trust me – not one of these technologies can exist and thrive on their own.  There are simply too many shops fighting in the same red ocean.  The year 2000 shop has always needed a diverse range of technology at their disposal for customizing apparel and other items, but now the new shop must know how to marry technology onto one canvas.  It’s not about a la carte design.  DTG & Flock, Water Based Screen printing & Foil, CCH2O & Pebble Puff, Sublimation & Reflective, Heat Applied Film & Embroidery, Applique & Rhinestones.

Mixing and matching is the “now” of customized clothing and the future of team sports (see Nike system of a dress Pro Combat uniforms).

For this reason I urge you to spend time learning how to combine the technology at your disposal and to consider new technology that compliments what you have.  Get out to a trade show, take some classes, watch some YouTube videos:) and learn about special effects that can add value to your work.

If you own a vinyl cutter, here is one material that can add dimension to your design work:

Please leave a comment below if you have any examples of mixing technology to win a bid.

T-Shirt for LeBron – With a Roland GX-24 Cutter and a Fusion Heat Press – VIDEO

9 Jul

So it’s been just over 24 hours since “The Decision” on ESPN where LeBron James announced he is going to South Beach to join the Miami Heat.  I’m guilty, I stayed up late last night – actually until about midnight watching the special and then debating with a friend in my living room.  Once we agreed to disagree on our debate, who would win the Eastern Conference next year and BEAT LA, I started thinking…how can we as decorators capitalize on these types of events????

And so it began….at about 10:00am this morning I went into our video production room and pitched an idea and tight deadline to Joe our video production guru.  After some conversation, he agreed to a challenge of brain storming, shooting, editing (brilliantly I might add) and publishing a video all within 6 hours.  The video – a fast paced, upbeat highlight reel “making a t-shirt for LeBron James”.

So I grabbed my laptop hashed out a design while Joe started setting up the lighting.  After the design was complete, I grabbed a couple different colors of the CAD-CUT film we manufacture and the shot clock was on….

We began creating a shirt that we call “The King of South Beach”.

Here’s how the video  turned out:

Now we’re not sure LeBron will get this shirt or even if he does get it ever wear it, but it’s worth a shot.  The shirts in the mail and we’ll see what happens.  Worst case scenario we had a blast pumping out the video and now we’ll take the concept and use it again and again until it works:)  If you want to get your business on the map, you might try to do the same.  Imagine the PR you can get if a famous athlete, celebrity or business person actually wore your gear.

Oh and one more way you can capitalize…how about designing a shirt of your own to hang in the shop window or to post on your website?  People are pretty passionate about this LeBron debate…you may want to suggest they buy a t-shirt to express themselves.

Special thanks to Joe who did an awesome job with the editing under a tight deadline.  Leave us a comment to let us know what you think.  Also subscribe to our YouTube channel.

Oh and GO CELTICS!
